### Objectives
- Students will be able to identify key places in their local area.
- Students will learn about the roles of different places and how they contribute to the community.
- Students will develop observational and map-reading skills.
### Materials
- A large map of the local area
- Pictures of key places (e.g. school, park, shops, post office, library)
- Markers, crayons, and pencils
- A blank map worksheet for each student
- Storybook related to the community (e.g. “The Jolly Postman” by Janet & Allan Ahlberg)
- Chart paper and sticky notes
### Lesson Outline
#### Introduction (10 minutes)
1. **Greeting and Objective Introduction:**
- Greet the students and introduce the topic. Explain that today, we will learn about our local area, where we live, and important places in our community.
2. **Engaging Question:**
- Ask: “Can anyone tell me a special place they visit in our local area?” Listen to and acknowledge students' responses.
#### Main Activity (30 minutes)
1. **Story Time (10 minutes)**
- Read a storybook related to the community, such as “The Jolly Postman.” Discuss the different places the characters visit.
2. **Map Study (10 minutes)**
- Show the large map of the local area. Point out and place pictures of key locations around the map.
- Discuss each place briefly (e.g., “This is our school, we learn and play here,” “This is the park where we can play on the swings and slides.”)
3. **Interactive Discussion (10 minutes)**
- Hand out blank map worksheets to each student.
- Guide students to draw and label important places on their map worksheet.
- Walk around the classroom to assist and encourage students as they work on their maps.
#### Independent Practice (10 minutes)
1. **Drawing and Describing:**
- Ask students to choose one place from their map and draw a picture of it on a separate sheet of paper.
- Encourage them to write one or two sentences about why this place is important.
#### Conclusion (10 minutes)
1. **Sharing Time:**
- Invite students to come up and share their drawings and descriptions with the class.
2. **Wrap-Up Discussion:**
- Recap the key points of the lesson. Revisit the map and ask students which places they learned about.
- Encourage students to tell their family about the places they learned and perhaps visit one of them with an adult.
#### Assessment
- Observe students’ participation during discussions and map activity.
- Review students’ completed maps and drawings to ensure they have grasped the concept of identifying and understanding key local places.
### Extension Activities
- **Field Trip:**
- Organise a short walking field trip to some of the key places discussed, if feasible.
- **Parent Involvement:**
- Encourage parents to take their children on a local area walk and talk about the different places.
